This year, Toyota once again beat out rivals in terms of the sheer number of TOP SAFETY PICK and TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards it earned from the IIHS. Nine Toyota models qualified, along with five additional Lexus models—more than any other automaker.
But in our opinion, it's not just about whether a vehicle can be a TSP. Many models that are technically awarded with a TSP only qualify when certain specific package options are equipped, often on the most expensive trim levels.
The 2017 Prius, Prius Prime, Corolla, and Highlander all come standard with the gear needed to earn their safety awards—advanced or superior front crash prevention, and acceptable or good headlights. The Camry's Pre-Collision System is an available feature, but will be standard on the upcoming 2018 Camry redesign this summer.
