2018 Toyota 4Runner Review Peoria, AZ

Adventure Awaits in the Toyota 4Runner

While the Toyota 4Runner is still sporting a design that hasn't changed in any big way since 2009, it can still bring you across any trail that you set your tires towards. The 4Runner does a good job of getting you down the beaten path, but it does an even better job of blazing its own trail. Finding its home among drivers who like to go on camping trips as often as they can, off-roaders, and those who appreciate exploring for the sake of adventure, the 4Runner offers what few other vehicles can.

The 4Runner holds onto a construction that most other SUVs have abandoned: body-on-frame construction. Most other models have moved to the unibody construction for better efficiency, but the 4Runner prioritizes elsewhere. The construction includes skid plates over all of the most essential components underneath, making sure it will be as protected as possible when you are out exploring.

Trims range from modest options like the SR5 and SR5 Premium, to the 4Runner Limited that has all of the bells and whistles, then there are TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and TRD Pro trims that make sure you are equipped for travelling anywhere that you could possibly want to go.

A Spacious Interior

While the exterior might not have seen a redesign for nearly a decade, the interior continues to stay modern. A Power Moonroof helps you appreciate the outdoors while you are on the road, and when the weather isn't nice enough to enjoy, the available heated and ventilated front seats will keep you cozy. No matter if you get caught in a blizzard, or decide to drive through a desert, the 4Runner is sure to get you through in the most comfortable way possible.

If you intend on bringing passengers along with you, there are several options depending on how many you are planning for. The SR5, SR5 Premium, and Limited allow for a third-row, making it good for seven passengers, but if you are looking to maximize cargo space for all the gear that you might need to bring along, the TRD models only allow for up to five passengers.

When you decide that you are going to maximize cargo space and fold down the rear seats, you can get up to 88.8 cubic feet of cargo space, which gives you more than the Toyota Highlander and the Jeep Wrangler. It is made easier to reach every inch of the cargo space with a sliding rear cargo deck and power-sliding rear glass in the back windshield, keeping you from unpacking whenever you need to find something that you have stashed away. The cargo deck can hold up to 440 pounds, making it easier to set up camp, organize the gear, or pull things out to get to a specific bag.

Engines and Capabilities

Toyota knew the 4Runner would never have the biggest engine, but that didn't stop them from making one of the most capable SUVs on the market. Its prominent 4.0-liter V6 makes 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, and is paired to a five-speed automatic transmission. This transmission seems a little behind when you compare it to the ten-speed transmissions that are available, but Toyota includes all of the features that give the 4Runner its legendary off-roading status. There are even towing packages to allow the 4Runner to tow up to 5,000 pounds, helping you bring along any of the larger toys or gear that you might want.

While the engine provides the power that you could need, all of the features will help it maintain the best control when you are off-roading. Features like Hill Start Assist Control (HAC), Downhill Assist Control (DAC), part-time and full-time 4WD available, and Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) to make sure you can have the most traction possible, no matter what trail that you end up on. If you opt for the TRD trims, you get exclusive Bilstein® shocks, and TRD-tuned front springs.

Why to Make the 4Runner Yours

If you are someone who looks forward to any outdoor activity, likes to explore whenever they can, or wants a reliable vehicle to take you through any condition, then the 4Runner is the vehicle for you. It might not be as powerful as a Durango SRT, but Toyota knows the combination of features to put together one of the most impressive off-roading SUVs that you will find. It hasn't changed much since 2009 because it doesn't need to, it shows itself exactly as what it is: powerful and ready for anything.
